AMS Comparison Tool

How it Works

The AMS Comparison Tool provides a quick, simple way for users of Essential for Living to select an Alternative Method of Speaking which is likely to be effective for their non-verbal child or adult. This tool accomplishes the selection method described in chapter 6 of the Essential for Living handbook without using the Selection Diagram mylar, which is included with the handbook.

The AMS Comparison Tool quickly compares your learner's sensory, skill, and behavioral repertoires with those that tend to occur when each of 46 alternative methods of speaking are effective, and selects methods with the greatest number of repertoire matches. Of these methods, the tool also selects those that retain the greatest number of advantages of spoken words with respect to both the speaker and the audience. Then, users can select an alternative method of speaking for their learner based on these two sets of criteria. They can then test the effectiveness of this method for this learner using procedures described in chapter 6.

How it's Used

Select the boxes that correspond to the components of your learner's sensory, skill, and behavioral repertoires. Clicking on a box selects that component and changes the background color to yellow; clicking on it a second time de-selects it and returns the background color to gray.

Once you have selected all the relevant components of your learner's repertoires, click on Compare AMSs. The tool will select the alternative methods of speaking that most closely match your learner's repertoires and retain the greatest number of advantages of spoken words.
